How to Back Up and Migrate Your Browser Bookmarks

If you are reinstalling Google Chrome, switching to some other web browser or just simply back up purpose, we suggest you to backup your bookmarks to an HTML file. Most of our browser data are not too important – cookies get expire, history and downloads eventually be cleared. But bookmarks on chrome, firefox, opera etc. are important that’s why you are allowed to import and export bookmarks. The main idea behind exporting and importing of bookmarks is to creating backups migrate between browsers and computers without much effort. Most browsers like Google ChromeMozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer export your bookmarks in an HTML file but some do require an extension, add-on or a third party program.

In this article, we will tell how to import or export bookmarks in Chrome and Firefox

Steps to import or export bookmarks in Google Chrome

Step1 – Firstly click the Chrome menu icon located on the top right corner of your web browser window and go to Bookmarks > Bookmarks Manager option. Or alternatively, you can also open the bookmark manager by just pressing Ctrl+Shift+O from the keyboard.

Step2 – A new browser screen having main categories of folders and organizes display on your screen. Just click on organize then you see two options “Import bookmarks from HTML file…” and “Export bookmarks to HTML file…”.

Step3 – If you are migrating to other browser or back up bookmarks data then you simply select export bookmarks to HTML file and if you want to switch from other browsers then you go for import bookmarks.

Step4 – On selecting your desired option you will be prompted to “Save As” dialog box. Chrome will automatically give HTML file a name containing current date and please navigate to save your file to the location of your choice on your PC. Then click save.

NOTE: Although we are exporting bookmarks from a different browser, please add the name of the browser to its file name.

If you are importing bookmarks from other browsers then select the file which you want to import to your current browser then click open. Bookmarks once imported from an HTML file are going to a folder called Imported.

That’s all! Now you can easily restore bookmarks from chrome and firefox.

Final Words

Firstly click the Chrome menu icon located on the extreme top right corner and go to Bookmarks > Bookmarks Manager option.
